Ion Pulse Welder

Welding sub-millimetre MI Thermocouples using Ion Pulse Technology

This revolutionary new welding machine uses Ion pulse technology to create a controlled clean weld on sub-millimetre MI Thermocouples. The basic principle utilises a cross between TIG welding and vacuum plasma welding but unlike costly vacuum plasma welders the heat energy source components are simple and require very little maintenance.

• Low Cost alternative to Laser Welding
• Consistent Weld quality
• Conductor and sheath closure welding
• Quick turnaround
• No alignment problems
• Clean Oxide free Welds
• Long cables accommodated
• Automatic Weld control
• Low running costs
• Reduced strip down

Operation is simple and basic. The prepared 0.5mm MI Thermocouple is pushed up through the bottom of the chamber and locked into place by tightening the ring on the bottom insulator.

The Thermocouple leads are attached to a clip to provide a return path for the weld current. When the weld sequence is started the chamber is quickly evacuated of all air and then flooded with argon. The argon is then also evacuated to a low pressure.

When an arc is struck between the cathode and anode it produces a stream of Ions, which collide with the conductors of the thermocouple. The released energy causes the conductors to melt and weld together. Unlike open welding there is negligible oxygen in the weld pool and this produces a very clean, uncontaminated weld.
The sheath closure weld uses the same system with the return clip connected to the thermocouple sheath.
